Choosing Sport Court Surfaces

Choosing the right sport court surfaces for your facility can be a daunting prospect. In addition to the need to consider available space and budgetary limitations, it is also necessary to ensure the sports court surfaces you select have the right characteristics to suit the sports you intend to use them for.

Characteristics of Sport Court Surfaces

An athletics court or running track, for example, would have to have different characteristics to a court designed to accommodate ball sports. What’s more, different ball sports will also require different sets of characteristics with regards to ball bounce, playing speeds, etc. Football or rugby pitches, for instance, would need to be very different to tennis courts.

Standards and Guidelines

To make matters yet more complicated, sport court surfaces may, depending on the intended use, also be required to comply with specific standards. A tennis surface intended to be used for national or international competitions, for instance, would have to comply with standards laid-out by the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association), ITF (International Tennis Federation) and SAPCA (Sports & Play Construction Association).

Size Matters

This not only applies to the characteristics surfaces, but also to the size of courts. While tennis courts for recreational home use, for instance, would not have to be any bigger than 33.53 m x 16.45 m, the recommended (LTA) minimum size for courts is 34.75 m x 17.07 m. For courts intended for competitive use, the minimum recommended (LTA) size would be 36.57 m x 18.29 m.
